6 May 2019

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US $94,010 for the Project for Construction of Kada Ahtet Basic Education Primary School in Paung Township, Mon State.

The handover ceremony of the new school building for the project took place in Paung Township, Mon State on 2 May 2019. Ms. Suzumi Sekine, Third Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, committee chairperson, committee members of the construction project and local residents attended the ceremony.

One of the school buildings at Kada Ahtet Basic Education Primary School which was constructed in 1954 notably deteriorated with broken window sills and damaged wooden columns. A part of the upper level floor had to be closed down due to the danger of collapse. In addition, students had difficulties taking notes since desk tops were uneven from decay. In order to secure a safe learning environment, the Government of Japan provided assistance for construction of a two-story reinforced concrete building with 6 classrooms and full furniture. The project will benefit 219 students attending the school.

The Government of Japan has assisted 904 grass-roots projects, including 467 education projects, 200 healthcare projects, 140 public welfare and environment projects, 61 infrastructure projects and 36 others in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993. This assistance is expected to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
